Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, or APJ Abdul Kalam, was a scientist and statesman from India who served as the 11th president of India. Born in Rameswaram, India, Kalam studied physics and aerospace engineering. He worked for many years at the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Indian Space Research Organisation, and was known as the “Missile Man of India” for his work on ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He was also involved in India’s nuclear tests.
Kalam was a popular president, and was almost nominated for a second term in 2012, but decided not to run. After leaving office, he taught at universities and supported a movement to fight corruption. In 2015, he passed away at the age of 83, and was honored with a state funeral.
Kalam was known for his spiritual side, and was inspired by the teachings of a Hindu guru named Pramukh Swami. He wrote two books, “Transcendence” and “India 2020”, which talked about his spiritual experiences and his vision for India as a “knowledge superpower” by 2020. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, for his contribution to science and technology.
